I organize an annual benefit for our local public school. Every year we have a raffle. This year, we raffled off three beautiful black-and-white photographs taken by a local photographer of some note.
At the benefit, it was my job to draw the winning tickets. One person — let’s call her Ms. X — won the first photo. Then, when I drew the ticket for the second photo, I saw in a split second that Ms. X had won that one, too. So, as quickly as I could, I put her ticket back in the box and drew another, different name. Was that ethical?
(Another piece of information, which may or may not be relevant: Ms. X is super rich and promised to contribute far more to the benefit than she actually did. I’ve been irritated with her for weeks.)
